(January 08, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Department of Inland Revenue expects to collect Rs. 100 million within the next four months, says Mahinda Medagoda, the department's Commissioner General. “We intend to add more tax payers to facilitate this objective,” he said.
The Department plans to launch a special programme within the coming three months in this regard and new tax payers would be added through an awareness programme which would include making the public aware of the concessions and social standing they would achieve by paying taxes.
Madegoda observed that those tax payers who pay more than Rs. one million will be presented with a Gold Card, while those who pay more than Rs. 500,000 will be presented with a Silver Card and the benefits connected to those categories would also be increased.
He also said that a project was underway to provide tax reports and file tax applications via the Internet.
