Do not make public servants your stooges, Karu tells Government

(January 19, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The United National Party has made an urgent appeal to all members of the Public Service in the country to ensure that the election is conducted in a free and fair manner. Issuing a release, the UNP urges the Public Servants to remain impartial and unbowed to the political pressures they face.

The release issued by the Deputy Leader of the UNP, Karu Jayasuriya, states that as the constitutional dictates have been delegated to the back burner by the present administration, the Public Service is being suffocated by the weight of political interference and officers who choose the path of integrity and dignity are sidelined to make way for political stooges and loyalists who will bend the law to the advantage of the incumbent regime.

The release goes on to state that while there are many dedicated and dignified officers in the police service, only those who are willing to dance to the tunes of their political masters are given promotions and positions of power, and as a result, the police have been used as weapons to intimidate opponents of the regime.

The Deputy Leader of the UNP adds that the politicization of the Public Service, Police and Armed Forces and the diplomatic missions would result in lowering the morale of the employees of the very fabric of their services and he thereby requests the government to refrain from doing so for the sake of the country.
