Hudson’s Hadu language use

“People express their respect to each other through their language. People can also express their disrespect to each other by the use of language. When the public media is allowed to be used in order to communicate such lack of respect for person ,that has extremely demoralizing impact in the entire society.”

(December 24, Colombo, Sri Lank Guardian) Guwardene must be congratulated for condemning the cheap use language by SLBC chairperson Hudson Samarasighe, by use of such words as Aroo, Moo, Yakaa, Booruwa, Kaalakanniya, Perethaya, Haraka and the like.

Mass Media has the capacity of raising the cultural level of a populations. The language use and the habit of expression can very much improve and refined by the way media using language.

On the other hand the use of language in inappropriate manner can help to bring down the standard use of language in the population. The degeneration in the use of language also results in degeneration of relationships among human being. A person who is addressed to in an endearing language like “oba” reacts very differently, if addressed antagonistically with word such as “Tho” or “Umba”. The change of attitudes, change of perceptions of persons can be created, either for the better or for a worse by the use of language.

Throughout the world , attention is directed by the societies ad well as the authorities to improve and refine the language used in the media. Freedom to express different views is a matter relating to ideas. However in expressing whatever views has to be done in a refined manner. That is a duty of any one who want to engage in public discourse. Even debate among persons with extremely different points of views, can be conducted in the most descent and refined language.

By conducting ones discourse through such appropriate language use, those who participate as listners are helped not only to understand ones ideas but also to improve their attitudes and to learn art of communication in refined manner.

Therefore, when bad language in used in media it is not a just matter of bad taste. Its matter which related to maintaining proper standard of conduct within society. In Short, this is an ethical issue. To use bad language in public media is unethical and it should be a duty of society as well as of the appropriate authority to ensure such use of language is not allowed in the public media.

Such bad conduct in the use of bad language is even worse, when it is done by the person a representing higher authority in the media institutions. And also when such persons are perceived by the public as representing by the government. When bad language is used to propagate some ideas in favour of exiting regime, That is infact a slur on the regime itself.

The political regime that allows use of bad language for its propaganda, is infact engaged in brining about the lowering of the standards of communication and behaviors in the population itself.

People express their respect to each other through their language. People can also express their disrespect to each other by the use of language. When the public media is allowed to be used in order to communicate such lack of respect for person ,that has extremely demoralizing impact in the entire society.

Its surprising how this kind of practice has been allowed in the SLBC. This programme conducted by Hudson Samarasinghe under the title “ Ratama Katha Karai” is has gone on for a very long time and the Govt. has allowed this programme continue in this manner. This is an act of extreme bad taste and irresponsibility on the part of the Governmentitself. It is time that the public express their outrage about this public abuse of the mass media mass media to express indecent language.
