(December 23, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Forty years of shameless politics from 60 years of the terrible political history of this country should disqualify any future politician. What have these 40 years of participation in local politics have done to the country? They have messed up the entire country and destroyed the possibility of a decent life within the country. The country today is a lawless place; a terrible place to live in. it is a place where life has become threatened from every possible quarter. The policemen are servants of unscrupulous politicians. Everyone is engaged in misusing the political system for their own benefit. For the ordinary citizen life is a nightmare.
If someone had been in politics for 40 years it means that that person is complicit in all the crimes which are a result of the misuse of this system. Can someone who has misused this system be the leader of these long suffering people anymore? If such a person can become the leader of this country again it means that the people will suffer the same problems to a worse degree. It means that there will be no reform, no change and anything that might go in the name of change will be for the worse.

If somebody has been in politics for 40 years then anything this person has said during this period should be treated as a disqualification for him to continue leading. How can you deal with the lies that have been told over a period of 40 years? If what was said to the people were, in fact, not lies then there should have been something of a betterment that those words would have brought for the people. All the words said over these last 40 years have only brought disaster on the people of Sri Lanka. They have been like a tsunami or something even worse than a natural disaster. Should such words be in the language of politics in this country any longer?
Forty years of shameless politics. If anyone who has been a politician for the last 40 years was to continue in a responsible post the first thing that this person should do is to make a confession of his own contribution to the terrible tragedy that the people are facing now. A person that cannot confess openly to this contribution to the suffering of his people should be treated as a hypocrite and a person that can only contribute to the suffering of the people in the future.
Forty years of shameless politics. That is what needs to be repudiated. Forty years of shameless politics, that is what needs to be given up. Forty years of shameless politics, that is what the people of this country do not need. Forty years of shameless corruption, that is what the people of this country do not need anymore. Forty years of the betrayal of law and order, that is what the people of this country do not need anymore. Forty years of murder, forced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, displacement of people, that is what the people do not need anymore.
Take the case of the women of this country. What have they received from the politicians for the last 40 years? There are mothers who are weeping for their children because the politicians mismanaged the country and this led to the deaths of their children. There are women who have been deprived of their right to advance their place of subjugation into a place of quality with others. Many of them still have to see that their children will have no future in their country. There are women who have left the country and who have spent many years doing domestic work trying to scratch out a living so that they can send their money to their poorer parents, children and even husbands. That is what 40 years of shameless politics has done to the women of Sri Lanka. In the kitchens there is lamentation. At every meal people curse their fate. That is what 40 years of shameless politics has done to this country.
Therefore anyone who claims a right to rule on the basis of such a political life should be disqualified from the beginning. Such a person is qualified only to be brought before a peoples’ tribunal for being a part of the betrayal of everything that is decent, everything that the people could have wanted. He should be tried for destroying the dreams of the people. That is what people with a long record of politics deserve in this country.
