Unfortunately, since the Presidential system of government was introduced in Sri Lanka by JRJ, the people were denied any chance to elect a true son of the soil.

(November 26, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) This is truly an honest opinion express by the government, which should draw the attention of all the people of Sri Lanka. People should ask themselves what are the so-called characteristics recognized as “proper” in the today’s politics and found in the present day leaders. The so-called “people’s leaders” produced by the main two main political parties, particularly since 1977 commonly possessed the following qualities.
* ability to cheat the people at will and at any cost
* Absence of vision to identify a “team” fiercely loyal and passionate to the motherland with a true hunger to serve the nation
* Experience and knowledge to accumulate country’s wealth by any means
* Quality of narrow mindedness and petty political agenda to serve only their cronies
* Unpatriotic attitude towards the motherland and willingness to let anybody to exploit country’s wealth and resources
* Absence of a vision, capacity or commitment to improve the quality of life of the people of Sri Lanka
We should ask ourselves whether General Fonseka is a man with these qualities. The answer is clear “no”. General Fonseka does not belong to that clan and he does not associate with any of such qualities. He has a proven character and integrity. He is truly a committed and patriotic man with right leadership qualities and fiercely loyal and passionate to his motherland.
Unfortunately, since the Presidential system of government was introduced in Sri Lanka by JRJ, the people were denied any chance to elect a true son of the soil. They had to elect the politicos with the “proper CV” fielded by the two main political parties that valued the “proper credentials” very much as that paved them unfettered opportunities to accumulate wealth belongs to the people at will. As a result Sri Lanka marched backward and continues to follow the same path up until today.
What Sri Lanka lacking today is an honest, committed leader with a proven character and genuine desire to take the country forward. There is a lot to learn from the champion leaders llike Lee Kuan Yew and Mahathir Mohamed who had right qualities to make a real difference for the people of Singapore and Malaysia. -Sri Lanka Guardian

While I agree with most of what Vishwamithra says I reserve my opinion of Sarath Fonseka as a the presidential hopeful.
Which brings me to compare how the media tells the nations what is news.
When I was at the newsdesk of the Daily News, the late Daryll de Silva,a very witty and ubiquitous journalist used to say, "Pearl, we five morons here at the desk decide what is important news in this whole island to the English-readers. How sad is that?"
Similarly as V points out we have just the same old parties with frequent crossing over of members being regurgitated ad infinitum.
And as a result not a single leader has come out with a pragmatic solution to the ethnic problem.
