The UPFA election outcome is a victory for democracy- Bogollagama

(October 11, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama in a message on the landslide victory of the UPFA at the just concluded Southern Provincial Council elections has described the victory as an endorsement by the people of the UPFA’s leadership under Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa, the President.

In his message, Foreign Minister Bogollagama also stated that the election has been recognized as being free and fair and that the enthusiasm of the people led to a voter turnout of 67.88 %, with the UPFA securing 38 seats, which is two third of the Provincial Council. He further stated that a victory of this magnitude reflected the will of the people and their endorsement of the leadership of the President Rajapaksa, who had liberated the country and its people from decades of terrorism.

He stated that the recent victory was a continuation of the successes achieved at eight consecutive elections held from East to the South which demonstrated the clear manifestations of the reconciliation process of the polity under the leadership of the President Rajapaksa and the trust reposed on the UPFA Government.

The election results also give a clear indication that the people of Sri Lanka have placed their confidence on the democratic process for governance over extremism, separatism and terrorism. He further added that the people’s trust in the governance and the economic and social development programmes and the handling of Sri Lanka’s foreign relations under leadership of President Rajapaksa, were effectively reflected in the recent election victories.
