(October 30, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) An island-wide campaign to institutionalise children who do not attend school and instead engage in various forms of employment and begging is to be implemented by the Police Child and Women’s Bureau.
The bureau noted that this plan would be put into effect after taking such children into their custody and producing them before court.
The Bureau added that they were in the process of formulating a circular to present to court along with those children taken into their custody.
The circular which will be sent to all police stations across the island has been forwarded to the IGP’s office.
The Bureau noted that steps had already been taken to take street children into their custody in the Colombo District.
According to the Bureau they have already taken 29 children into their custody whom they have institutionalised after being produced before court.
