(October 23, Jaffna, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Department of Prisons has decided to construct a new prison complex on a three acre land in a bid to minimize the congestion at the Jaffna Prison. ‘The proposed location for the new prison was inspected by the Minister of Justice and the Commissioner General of Prisons during a tour of Jaffna last week’, said the media spokesperson for the Prisons Department, Prisons Commissioner Kenneth Fernando.
He added that at present three houses adjacent to the Jaffna Prison had also been leased out for house inmates and around 400 prisoners are housed at this complex.
The proposed new complex will be constructed on a land owned by the Prisons Department in close proximity to the Jaffna Courts Complex. -Sri Lanka Guardian
