India offers more assistance to Sri Lanka

(October 15, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama welcoming India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Smt. Preneet Kaur who is currently on a three day visit to Sri Lanka to attend the 8th Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) Ministerial Meeting in Colombo on 15th October, conveyed Sri Lanka’s appreciation for the humanitarian assistance provided to the country by India in the aftermath of the conflict.

Smt. Kaur, responding to the Minister, stated that India was pleased to have been able to provide timely assistance and reiterated her Government’s willingness to provide further humanitarian assistance in specific areas upon request.

The Foreign Minister stated that from the perspective of the Government of Sri Lanka, everything possible was being done to improve the conditions in the IDP welfare villages. Foreign Minister Bogollagama also detailed the action taken by the Government of Sri Lanka in resettling the IDPs and explained the difficulties that the Government encountered in this progress. Demining work carried out by the Sri Lanka Army and the Indian Demining team are progressing expeditiously, nevertheless more assistance required to complete this process.

State Minister Kaur stated that she was aware of the difficulties in such an exercise and agreed to discuss the possibility of increasing assistance to Sri Lanka and referred to the offer of assistance for rebuilding the Duraiappa Stadium and establishing a cultural centre in Jaffna.

During the interactions, the two Ministers also discussed the progress made in the SAARC and on ways and means of building on the progress achieved.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Indian High Commission were also present during the interactions.
