(October 14, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Speaking to the media today (14), UNP M.P. Ravi Karunanayake said, the last Southern PC election results is a dire signal to the Govt. that it cannot fool all the people all the time. Even in the President’s electorate he could not hold on to the percentage of votes that was received in the earlier elections. The least number of votes polled for the PA was at Hambantota. The President and the Ministers who went on bragging before and during elections that it will poll 80 to 90 % votes , could only get 65 % votes.
The Govt. having duped the people from the day of its advent making 74 promises in its Mahinda chintana could not fulfill even 4 promises in its four years. Now , the Govt. is trying to dupe the world too with lies and deceitful machinations. In order to circumvent its promises to the IMF when it took the loan that it will cut down the deficit , raise its revenue etc. is unable to fulfill any of these conditions. Therefore, is not presenting the budget this year which would expose the Govt. ‘s fiscal bungling and incapacity to honor its promises. The Govt. which took the IMF loan in its desperation on the policy of robbing Peter to pay Paul is up against a blank wall . The total loans taken by this Govt. during its four years in power exceeds the total loans taken by all the Governments in the history of SL. This alone is proof how ‘well’ the Govt. and its economic wizards have managed the economy.
The Govt. and its economic pundits appointed through politicization speak as though SL ‘s economy is so blooming that it can give a loan to America . This is propped by its media which also confirms these falsehoods as true . How long can the Govt. ride roughshod on the people’s burning problems and economic woes bluffing and hiding the true position ? he asked. Last year alone by submitting 23 supplementary estimates to Parliament it spent Rs. 16000 million more, over and above the budget allocation.
This year it is only presenting a vote of account instead of the budget. If it is the budget , it has to give relief to the people and meet the various demands of the workers and unions. It is in order to avert this , and cheat the people of relief , it is presenting a vote on account , he added.
The Govt. has become SL ‘s Robbing Hood , robbing the people of their earnings via taxation , tariff and cost of living hikes only to maintain its Establishments manned by all its corrupt stooges, cronies and hangers on . He exposed the annual losses of the Institutions given below :
