Galle harbour police assaulted me: Muttuhettigama

( September 28, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) “I have received death threats from the Galle Harbour Police,” said Nishantha Muthuhettigama making a special statement in Galle magistrate's court today.

Making the statement with the permission of the Galle Chief Magistrate Thaamara Tennakoon, when the case against him was taken up for consideration, the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) candidate for the upcoming Southern Provincial Council elections said that he had no faith in the police and that he had faith only in the Secretary of Defence and the judiciary.

In the statement, he said that on the 18th of this month, while he was returning home after being granted bail, he was assaulted by the OIC of the Galle Harbour Police and a group of persons who were not police officers but terrorists.

Mr. Muthuhettigama pointed out that as a result of this he could not make a statement to the Galle Harbour Police as ordered by court.

At this point, the attorney at law appearing on behalf of Nishantha Muthuhettigama produced before court a CD containing visuals of Mr. Muthuhettigama being assaulted.

The attorney at law thereafter filed an application with court seeking special protection for his client.

Court then ordered Mr. Muthuhettigama to make his statement before the Galle SSP.

The case was taken up this morning based on two complaints made by the Galle Police and the Galle Harbour Police.

The case will be taken up again on the 6th of November.
