President’s pictures so ‘prodigious and precious ’ that they can cover up any lawlessness ?

(Auguat 07, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) UNP M.P. and Gen. Secretary , Tissa Attanayake addressing the media at the UNP media unit today (7 Jul), referring to the forthcoming Uva Province and Northern elections ,said the Govt. and its candidates are committing gross violations of the election laws brazenly and un-hesitantly .

Not only the President Rajapakse has become a byword allegedly for not respecting the constitution and the laws of the country; now, in the run up to the polls too , his pictures, cutouts and portraits are being used to cover up the illegal activities of the party supporters and candidates . The Police refuse to remove the illegal posters , banners and cutouts of the candidates which are deliberately displayed along with those of the President . The Police say , they cannot remove the illegal displays as they are mingled with those of the President Rajapakse , Attanayake lamented. Though elections campaigns ended on 5th midnight under the law ,and the cutouts , posters and banners of the UNP have been removed , the Govt. cutouts , banners and posters continue to be displayed. Have President’s pictures and cutouts been debased by lawlessness or being used to protect lawlessness ? he asked. Where on earth has a Govt. stooped so low to win foul elections ? he asked .

Rajapakse Govt. is not interested in solving the people’s or country’s problems . It is only interested in holding elections and entering the Guinness book of records as the first Govt. which has held elections (staggered) every two months for the whole of last year wasting all its time and people’s money only to rig and win elections ,while neglecting the side of nation building and alleviating people’s burdens for which it was elected. The Ministers have found it a an easy and frolicsome task wasting public funds running around talking and working for elections throughout the year ,neglecting onerous Ministerial duties.

Showing the pictures of the President and election advertisements in today’s newspapers of the Govt. candidates , he proved how openly and flagrantly the Govt. is breaking election laws. But, the election speeches made by the UNP are not even mentioned in the news , he pinpointed.

Though elections has become a comedy act and a matter of high fun for this irresponsible Govt. wasting billions and billions of rupees of people’s funds on elections ,and is aware that it is the people who are paying for its heinous crimes and sins, the Govt. is so ruthless and reckless that it has no realization of the deep tragedy it has plunged the country into, he noted.
