Government planning to release 100,000 Tamils from internment camps

(August 19, Jaffna, Sri Lanka Guardian) As a result of sustained international pressure, in particular from India, the government of Sri Lanka has decided to release some hundred thousand Tamils interned in the barbed wired camps in the north within the next few weeks.

Those who are not residents of Mullaitive and Killinochchi are to removed from their camps and sent to their home town said a government official in Kilinochchi anonymously. Specific directive have been sent to the government agents of these areas to proceed with the removal of these people from the camps.

The recent monsoon rains have caused serious difficulties for the interned people due to heavy flooding and it is also believed that the concerned international community was planning punitive measures against Sri Lankan government over its unrelenting stand on the release of the deteriorating situation.
