(July 17, Jaffna , Sri Lanka Guardian)The UNP, the main Opposition party, which has always steadfastly fought for the rights and betterment of all communities and ethnic harmony launched its election campaign yesterday (16 Jul) for the forthcoming local Council election in Jaffna.
The UNP Gen. secretary Tissa Attanayake, UNP M.P. Dr Jayalath Jayawardena and UNP Mayoral candidate for Jaffna Municipal Council and others who traveled to Jaffna , commenced their campaign after first worshipping at the Nallur Temple in Jaffna. Addressing a news conference later , Dr. Jayawardena highlighted the sufferings of the IDPs who are now reduced to the level of slaves in the camps .They are silenced by fear to talk . The UNP will stand by the hopes the people of Jaffna are reposing in it , he asserted.
As the Govt. is pummeled from all sides by divergent opinions and its political allies , it is unable to implement the 13th amendment nor solve the ethnic issue effectively. It is only the UNP which acts sincerely in the interests of all communities can solve the ethnic problem , he pinpointed.

Dr Jayewardene may want to bring his kith and kin to do contracts in the newly liberated areas as he did during the time he was a Miister in RW cabinet. What has he done to the people of Jaffna all these years? UNP is a party made up of the rich and the famous. They are there to safeguard the interests of the rich. These guys do not care whether you are Tamil or Sinhalese as long as they can make a fast buck. Anyway we can see very well how the former members of LTTE and its sympathizers will try to put up a show to embarrass the government. Mr. Jayewardene had forgotten that it was the LTTE who silenced the people of Jaffna not the government of Sri Lanka. Also the infamous Jaffna Library incident took place during the tenor of JRJ and not the present government.
