(July 23, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Govt. which said that it will not go with a begging bowl to the IMF for the loan , had at last sought and obtained it . It was just a few months ago , the Central Bank Governor Cabraal and the Deputy Finance Minister said, the IMF loan was not necessary; but, to this Govt., its own Ministers and officials blatantly contradicting each other’s statements is a daily routine and a habit , stated ,UNP M.P. Kabir Hashim when speaking to the media at the UNP media unit today (23 Jul) .
Though the Govt. is jubilant over the receipt of the US $ 2.5 billion loan in the context of its utter economic desperation, it is its duty to reveal to the people, under what terms and conditions this loan is granted by the IMF ; for the Govt. is going to repay out of people’s monies. In other words , the Govt. is once again going to heap burdens on the people by way of tax , tariff and price hikes. The Deputy Finance Minister has so far not been able to reveal to the Parliament the terms and conditions attaching to the loan suggesting that ,. like in Govt.’s other secretive programs , the Govt. is seeking to keep the stringent conditions on which the loan is being granted away from the people , and delude them to bear the debt burdens..
In just the first quarter of the year 2009 alone, the budget deficit rose to 4% ,and according to Central bank reports it will rise to 12 % by the year end. This IMF loan may keep it down to 7% , yet , the Govt. which has to repay the loan in 48 months will have no choice except continue riding unconscionably on the backs of the people as it has been doing right along since its advent , he lamented.
Hashim also showed a picture in the Dinamina newspapers of 21 -07 -2009 carrying a photograph of the President at a rally in Moneragala , and how the Govt. is deceiving the people by attaching a doctored picture of a large crowd alongside him attending the rally. Mr. Hashim proved pointing to the picture that there were people known to him in the crowd who were long dead on the date of the so called ‘large crowd’ meeting of the President. Besides ,the picture was one that represented a meeting in Mawanella , the electorate of Hashim. The Govt. noted for deceiving and distorting is exploiting its clever deceptions even to falsify pictures , he observed. -Sri Lanka Guardian

When UNP sold the country to various foreign interests, it was treated as freedom and democracy. When JRJ and Premadasa combo sold public institutions for a song to private merchants it was not considered anything bad. The currently assistance from IMF was requested for rebuilding the country. What did UNP and TNA henchmen and Tamil Diaspora did was trying to block the deal presenting bogus information. Now that loan is approved they cry foul on a different front. UNP and its leaders should grow up and be gentleman.
