(May 12, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe left the island last night on a tour of Europe and Norway.
A communiqué released by the United National Party stated that Wickremasinghe was scheduled to participate in a series of discussions centred on media freedom and the protection of democratic institutes.
It added that the Opposition leader intended to focus on the pressures and threats faced by journalists and media organizations in Sri Lanka.
Moreover, assassinations of journalists including that of Lasantha Wickrematunga will also be discussed during the tour.
As Asia Pacific Chairman of the International Democratic Union, Ranil Wickremasinghe also expects to hold several discussions with members of the union during his visit overseas.
