If the news of Prabhakaran's elimination is true, then, I as an Indian, and as a Tamil, would like to congratulate the Sri Lankan armed forces and President Rajapakshe, because the LTTE and Prabhakaran were the biggest hurdles in the way of the Sri Lankan tamils finding a solution to their problems. The past governments in Sri Lanka who failed to heed the legitimate demands of the Tamils, and the direct and indirect assistnace that governments in India offered to the LTTE were both responsible for creating this monster. Rajapakshe brought in a drastic change in strategy: he separated the LTTE and the Tamil issue. He was determined to eliminate the LTTE militarily, while ready to initiate a political process to solve the legitimate demands of Tamils. He has successfully achieved the first; now, the world will be watching his next moves on the second part of his strategy. If he fails to deliver on the second, eliminating one Prabhakaran and LTTE would be meaningless, because many more such monsters will crop up in Sri Lanka. In the proess, Rajapakshe has shown the world how to tackle terrorism. Look at the mess in Pakistan: under the tacit approval of USA, the Pakistani government stuck a deal with Taliban, which is now threatening to take over that country. Terrorist outfits like LTTE no doubt come out of the civil society because of some failure of powers that be in dealing with civilian issues. But once they become terrorists, they speak a different language. So governments have to takle these issues on two fronts: solve the civilian issues politically, and tackel the terrorists militarily. That is what Rajapakshe has done. We hope this will bring lasting peace and prosperity to the whole of Sri Lanka, including the Tamils.
