Hillary hubris, a jinx for Obama administration

By Philip Fernando in Los Angeles

(May 17, Los Angeles, Sri Lanka Guardian) Hilary Clinton’s unerring tendency to be fallible surfaced last week when she pronounced that Sri Lanka does not need an IMF loan at this time. Renowned for her disastrous Primary election campaign when she grounded to a halt, over one hundred million in the red while loosing ignominiously to a rookie called Obama, Hillary is now dabbling in economics. Hillary hubris is jinxing Obama administration according to many observers.

The Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal and IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn both reportedly contradicted Clinton’s assumption that Sri Lanka does not need the 1.9 billion dollar loan. Governor, Ajith Nivard Cabraal expressed the view that the technical stage of the loan is already completed.

Scientists have declared that the human brain is an amazingly complex thing, with an estimated five terabytes of storage and millions of passageways, and the ability to create more such circuits as needed. Everything has redundancy built in. Hillary may have surprised all those researchers with her built-in capacity for hubris. Not only that, she is thoroughly apt at mistiming her pronouncements. Sri Lanka had just won an unprecedented fight against the ruthless LTTE terrorists. She believes the time for a loan is not now. Then, when, Hillary! She is a diplomat, soothsayer and economist, but she continues to be fallible to a T.

After losing her Primary campaign and delaying to concede, and trying to take the battle to the party Convention, Hillary was a sorry spectacle in political heresy. She boasted that the glass ceiling which she was hoping to break as the first woman President, cracked into 18 million parts—that is how many votes she got. In reality the glass ceiling crashed on her and crushed her political ambitions for good. What timing and what vanity! Then, like the inebriated Romans, she threw up all she had for lunch, and decided to play second fiddle to President Obama carrying his diplomatic bags round the world.

Hillary has completely missed the bus. The reported stories of accelerated development in the East and the plans for rehabilitation of the Northern people have not had its impact on Hillary. The Sri Lankans are now getting ready to complete the restoration of the Jetavana Stupa, considered the largest stupa in the world. The Sri Lankan President will unveil the Stupa for public worship on June 4. A major moment of religious and cultural revival will ensue while the North will also see a renaissance. Many have predicted an unprecedented time for all. This will sadly not register in Hillary’s radar.

As Sri Lanka Air Force sprinkles sprinkle jasmine flowers from the air in reverence and while the gigantic work of rehabilitation begins in earnest, Hillary will be hugging on to her moth-eaten bag of decapitated ideology.

Hubris was the cardinal sin known to the Ancient Greeks- it meant something like "arrogance" in its most extreme form - the arrogance of imagining one to be better than the gods themselves. "Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.” We call it jinx today.
