(April 21, New York, Sri Lanka Guardian) Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary General of the United Nations has welcomed the escape by tens of thousands of civilians from the ‘safe zone’ in northern Sri Lanka over the last three days.
Noting that the departure of civilians to safer areas was welcome news, the UN chief had voiced his concern over the circumstances under which the rest of the civilians remained in the ‘safe zone’.
He has deplored the use of force by the LTTE in preventing the departure of civilians to the government-controlled area.
“In the light of the latest outflow of displaced persons, the UN is increasing its effort to provide the required humanitarian assistance and will continue to do all it can to ensure that conditions fully reflect international standards,” the UN chief has said.
