(April 07, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Resettlement of persons in the north will commence before the end of this month with the first phase taking place in the Mannar district, according to Risath Bathiyutheen, Minister of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services.
The number of persons arriving from the conflict areas has increased. Around 2,000 individuals arrived yesterday and around 20,000 internally displaced persons are taking shelter at two welfare centres.
More IDPs, numbering around 39,000, are sheltered at other welfare centres.
“We have appointed welfare officers to look into the needs of the IDPs under the advice of the President and also provided them with communication facilities. We hope to resettle them by the end of this month or beginning of May,” the minister said.
