Govt. sure cannot win by the ballot using the underworld gangs to win elections by the bullet -UNP

(April 20, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Speaking to the media today (20Apr) at the UNP media unit , UNP Gen. Secretary Tissa Attanayake said , the Govt. is possessed with a cruel obsession to win elections by training the guns and using violence , violations of laws and the underworld gangs against the Opposition parties and the voters. This is the first time in SL’s history such open and dangerous violence, threats and intimidation are being unleashed while the Govt. is turning a blind eye.

One of those leading this murder ad violence campaign is a UPFA candidate , Ajmal Mowjood whose close relative is a member of the National Police Commission. He is therefore using this underworld power and that of the Govt. to commit all the crimes with impunity. It can be imagined how violent this candidate is if his gang welcomes him in the campaigns by firing bullets instead of lighting crackers, he added .

Noted Island reconvicted criminals like Fajji and Bhaiyya are allegedly heading the Govt.’s election campaign . A few days ago ,a UNP supporter , Azhar Hajiar who held a UNP election meeting at his premises was intimidated the following day by the underworld gang who threatened him and demanded Rs. 100 lakhs of rupees . He had now fled the country , he said.

The Govt.’ s eagerness to win elections is outrunning its own sureness so much so that its own candidates are also under threats from those whom it is using against the Opposition candidates and parties, he lamented.

The UNP has already made a dire written complaint to the IGP , and is taking up these despicable and deplorable trends in Parliament , he noted.

It is pity UNP is crying foul of election violence. Actually it was JRJ politics which created otherwise incident free elections in Sri Lanka violent. These people who are crying foul were prominent members of UNP when all the villainy took place. The famous attacks on clergy and prominent members of society (Sarathchandra) and using the goons to win elections (Gonawala Sunil) all were UNP creation. They went to ulterior extent of wining elections by bullet, and now call the present government not democratic. At least the present government is holding elections in a very volatile environment without postponing them for ever like the UNP did. Come on who is Tissa Attanayake to ask the government to withdraw Army from the battle front to police the elections. Is he talking on behalf of their friend LTTE? These guys should be swept out from Sri Lankan politics without delay.
