(March 28, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The services of eleven prison officials, said to have led the strike on March 20, have been suspended, according to the Prisons Department.
“Two Assistant Superintendents of Prisons have been appointed to conduct the inquiry,” said Major General Vajira Wijegunawardene, Commissioner General of Prisons.
He said that the transfer of detainees to courts in Kalutara, Panadua, Matugama and Kesbewa was disrupted as a result of the strike action involving about 60 prison officials.
The initial report of the inquiry would be submitted to the Secretary of the Justice Ministry, he added.-Sri Lanka Guardian
