(March 06, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today welcomed AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa’s decision to stage a fast demanding a ceasefire in Sri Lanka.
In a statement here, the Chief Minister recalled that the State government had been taking efforts to bring about a ceasefire in the island nation by holding discussions with the Union government.
In the last three years, the State government had passed four resolutions in the Assembly urging the Centre to intervene and usher in peace so that Tamils’ lives could be protected.
He also recalled that Jayalalithaa had on various occasions had stated that the Centre cannot intervene in the issue.
However considering the gravity of the issue, Jayalalithaa has decided to hold a fast. ‘Whatever may be the differences between us, I was stressing for unity among parties for the cause of Tamils’, he said. ‘I wholeheartedly welcome her decision to hold the fast over the issue,’ he added. -Sri Lanka Guardian
