(February 05, New Delhi, Sri Lanka Guardian) BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani on Tuesday after atending a meeting of the representatives of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit, alleged that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government was insensitive to the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka. “The UPA Government had been extremely insensitive to the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka, thereby, permitting the present situation to continue to deteriorate, and which has inter-alia led to the ever-increasing influx of Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka,” a BJP press statement quoted Advani as saying.
Full text of the BJP press statement is as follows:
A Meeting was convened by Shri L. K. Advani, Hon’ble Leader of Opposition, with the representatives of the state BJP unit of Tamil Nadu. The meeting comprised a number of persons belonging to the BJP and included Thiru Navukkarasar, National Secretary BJP, La. Ganesan State President BJP Tamil Nadu and Shri Sukumaran Nambiar, Member, National Executive. Deep Concern was express by all present at the rapidly deteriorating condition of the Tamil Civilions in the area.
Consequently, the meeting felt that some urgent steps needed to be taken to bring about the evacuation of Tamil civilians from the battle zone. In order to achieve this objective it would be necessary to bring about some kind of institutional arrangement and appropriate machinery with the utmost despatch.
The meeting was of the view that the realization of the legitimate aspirations of the Tamil community, within a United Sri Lanka, by the grant of maximum powers through devolution by the Sri Lankan Government in order to enable a permanent solution to the political problem to emerge, must form top most priority.
It was recalled at the meeting that the India Sri Lanka joint statement on fishing arrangements issued a New Delhi 26th November 2008 had reiterated that there would be no firing on Indian fishing vessels especially in view of the fact that, as agreed in the same text, that the fisherman would have on person valid identity cards issued by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
The meeting was also of the view that the UPA Government had been extremely insensitive to the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka, thereby, permitting the present situation to continue to deteriorate, and which has inter-alia led to the ever-increasing influx of Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka.
