(February 21, New Delhi, Sri Lanka Guardian) South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal provincial legislature speaker, Willies Mchunu, on Friday condemned the genocide of Tamils by Sri Lankan government and expressed his support for the Tamil freedom struggle.
He expressed his condemnation when accepted a memorandum on behalf of the premier of Kwazulu Natal, Sbu Ndebele, from the demonstrators in the city.
The largest ethnic group of South Africa lives in Kwazulu-Natal province.
The demonstration rally was oganised by the Solidarity Group for Peace and Justice in Sri Lanka, the Tamil Co-ordinating Committee of South Africa and the Palestinian Support Group together with the members of the African National Congress.
More than 1500 South African people paraded through the city’s main street to Freedom Square.
They chanted slogans against mass killing of Tamils in Sri Lanka. They also urged India to stop sending arms to Sri Lanka and the international community to impose sanctions on Colombo government.
While moving round main thoroughfares of the capital city of Petermaritzburg, they shouted slogans: ”Viva Pirapaharan Viva”, ”Viva LTTE Viva",”There will be no surrender” and “Free Free Tamil Eelam".
Deputy chairperson of the Provincial branch of the ANC Youth League, Mtandeni Dlungwana, said they are fully supporting the Tamil Eelam struggle under the leadership of Pirapaharan.
Mayor Yusuf Bhamjee said the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka has to be solved politically, not through military means.
Former TNA Parliament Member MK Eelaventhan, accused India of double standards over the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils.

It is so sad these guys so far away make statements that is completely and utterly wrong. Either they are ignorant or they have been paid well by the LTTE to make these statements. The saddest thing is that these people are holding responsible positions in their country representing their own people. I can't imagine how these people are managing their own affairs.
More than that is that some South Africans have forgotten that Sri Lanka was one of the very few countries who supported their struggle against apartheid. Unfortunately they do not know what gratitude is. More serious matter is these so called responsible people should investigate these international matters more thoroughly before making them the laughing stock of the world. Unfortunately they are not the only ones who have been fooled by the LTTE. Remember they are three sides to any story. Stories from both sides and the Truth.
