(February 06, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) Ambassador of the Palestinian General Delegation to the UK, Prof. Manuel Hassassian, paid a courtesy call on Justice Nihal Jayasinghe, Sri Lankan High Commissioner in London at the University of Oxford. Also present at this meeting were Mr. Dilan Fernando (President, Oxford Sri Lanka Society) and Dr. Dinuka Kariyawasam (Events Officer, Oxford Sri Lanka Society). The aim of the meeting was to foster greater understanding and goodwill amongst the two peoples.
Prof. Hassassian conveyed the felicitations of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa. He then enlightened those present on the current situation in the Palestinian territories. He went on to detail the the diplomatic steps taken by the Palestinian Authority. He conveyed the sincere appreciation and deep gratitude of the Palestinian people to President Mahinda Rajapaksa for championing the Palestinian cause for so many decades. He stated that President Rajapaksa’s principled stand on the Palestinian issue was an example to other world leaders.
Justice Jayasinghe informed Prof. Hassassian that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been the President of the Sri Lanka Committee for Solidarity with Palestine for over 30 years. He updated Prof. Hassassian about the current situation in Sri Lanka. He detailed the progress made in democratisation and development of the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka where a former child soldier is now the Chief Minister steps undertaken by the Government of Sri Lanka to alleviate the sufferings of those affected by the conflict.
The long standing friendship and mutual trust between the two peoples were discussed. Prof. Hassassian congratulated the President and people of Sri Lanka on the upcoming 61st Independence Day.

The discussion concluded with the expressed optimism of those present that, after many years of conflict, citizens in both Sri Lanka and Palestine would be able to live in peace and harmony in the very near future.-Sri Lanka Guardian
