Laced with lies and falsehood

(February 16, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Note from the Editor: We thank Professor Shelton Gunaratne for sharing what appeared in the Tamilnet.com webmedia on the provincial elections. We ourselves have noted the pro-terrorism Tamilnet.com activities and have commented on it as well. This webmedia serves a group of extremely rich Diaspora who have absolutely no feelings for the people of Sri Lanka even for their kith and kin on the island. As is said of such filthy rich people, they get a sadistic orgasmic thrill out of the antics of Prabhakaran and his terror gang. Tamilnet.com is their mouth piece and most of its stories are laced it with lies and falsehood.

Here is text of letter sent from Shelton A. Gunaratne , Professor of mass communications emeritus,

On Sunday (12.32 GMT), the TamilNet headlined its lead story with the following quote attributed to an expatriate Sinhala academic:

'Electoral victories of Mahinda Government justify partition'

The lead paraphrased the academic's opinion as follows:

The frame of mind of Sinhala majority in the island of Sri Lanka reflects unequivocally in the impressive electoral victories secured by Mahinda Rajapaksa's government in the elections for the provincial councils of Central and North-West Provinces. The electoral victories endorse the ongoing brutal war, aiming total subjugation of Tamils. In the process, the Sinhala majority virtually concedes the need for partition in the island, if any polity acceptable to human civilization should prevail there, said an expatriate Sinhala academic commenting on the reports of 'record victory' for Rajapaksa's ruling UPFA in the provincial elections.

However, TamilNet dodged naming the brave academic. The academic "did not wish to be named," TamilNet reported.

This kind of reporting violates the elementary principles of news reporting. If the academic lacked the courage to be identified, he/she should not have been quoted by the news outlet. The quote could have been concocted by the editor of TamilNet himself/herself.

Yours truly,

Shelton A. Gunaratne
