States the United National Front and Opposition leader Ranil Wicjkramasinghe in his Thai Pongal Message to the Hindus of Sri Lanka.

Thaipongal is a day of celebration by all Hindus across the World who consider it a sacred day while also giving thanks to the Sun associated with a rich harvest of paddy.

The Farmers also make this an occasion to show their gratitude to all and everything that helped them in reaping a good harvest. These include the animals , implements , the environment and others who have contributed to the success . A tradition that has come down throughout history.

The important message this Thaipongal brings to the people is that this occasion is not only a cause for celebration but also expects to build goodwill , harmony and cordiality among humanity so that a virtuous life will spring forth.

On this Thaipongal day , we shall therefore focus on the virtuous living . This necessity is all the more important now than ever before when seen in the present context of increasing social degradation and perversion of true values .
