Rajapaksa said Sri Lankan troops captured the separatist Tamil Tigers' headquarters town of Kilinochchi on Friday, but within an hour of the announcement a suspected suicide bomber killed at least two people in the capital.

(January 02, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The President Mahinda Rajapaksa, paying a glittering tribute to heroic members of the Armed Forces over the capture of KILINOCHCHI, LTTE’s de-facto Eelam capital called upon once again the remaining Tiger cadres to lay down arms and surrender to the troops as early as possible.

During a specially convened meeting to officially announce the fall of KILINOCHCHI in Army hands on Friday (2) at the Presidential Secretariat, the President assured that he would salvage the entire northern populace from LTTE terrorism and usher in a new era of peace and prosperity. “Not only the ordinary civilians, but also each and every son and daughter of northern civilians to be born and those living would be facilitated to move about freely in a spirit of peace, reconciliation, harmony and freedom,”

The meeting was attended by Secretary Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Chief of Defence Staff, tri service commanders, Inspector General of Police and a host of senior ministers, deputy ministers, media personnel and senior government officers. At the end of the President Rajapaksa’s brief address to the Nation, the audience gave a huge standing ovation to the saviour of the Nation.

The prime mover behind the string of military successes after the incumbent President came into power Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka, Commander of the Army told the gathering how his troops effectively and strategically walked into Tiger strongholds and got rid of them capturing more and more land.

Hundreds of soldiers sweated, shed their blood, turned disable and sacrificed their lives during those 24-hour running military operations that were on after March 2007, irrespective of numerous challenges, including those from the rains. Those challenges could not stop our forward-march, nor were they able to prevent us from reaching our goals, Commander of the Army told the gathering.

“Torrential rains tried to hamper, so did the LTTE earth bunds. Our soldiers were carried away by storms and water currents. Within a matter of a few months we cleared all those hurdles and moved towards KILINOCHCHI and MULLAITTIVU. After an absence of 23 years, the Army were able to clear the A-32 MANNAR-POONERYN road linking the rest of the country with the northern peninsula. While thousands were preparing themselves for celebrations at the dawn of the New Year, our brave soldiers amidst LTTE threats brought the KILINOCHCHI hospital and the railway station under their control at the risk of their lives. Just one hour ago, a length of about 800 yards of the LTTE earth bund at MULLAITTIVU was also pierced, I believe all Sri Lankans will be able to live in peace with the liberation of the remaining areas shortly,” the Commander further assured.
