(December 21, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) In the first election related violence ahead of the Central Provincial poll a UNP office was attacked in the Galewela area of the Matale district during the early hours of Sunday.
UNP Matale District organizer, Ranjith Aluvihare told Timesonline that persons had arrived in three vehicles, one of them without a number plate and damaged sign board of the office located in the Galewela town.
He said that a police jeep had been seen close to the scene when the incident had taken place, but no action had been taken.
He said eyewitnesses to the incident are reluctant to make a statement to the police in fear of reprisal.
Mr. Aluvihare said he had already complained to the IGP and the DIG in the area.
Nominations for provincial elections in the central province has already been called, and polls are likely to be held in February. - Sri Lanka Guardian
