Seeman arrested again

(December 19, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) On a day of flux-filled activity, director Seeman, who is in the thick of controversy following his graceless remarks on former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was arrested.

Seeman was arrested near Devadanapatti by a police team from Erode, according to reports monitored here. He was set to be taken to Periyakulam.

Seeman, who was arrested earlier for his secessionist speech made in Rajapalayam, was on conditional bail. Seeman’s today’s arrest, in a sense, was on cards considering the pressure mounted by the Tamilnadu Congress men.

Yesterday, Tamilnadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K V Thangkabalu demanded the arrest of film Director Seeman under the National Security Act (NSA).

Thangkabalu has sought the arrest of Seeman for supporting the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and making derogatory remarks against former Prime Ministers.

In a statement here, he said Seeman, who was arrested for supporting the LTTE while addressing a rally at Rameswaram and now on bail, made a similar speech at a public meeting in Erode, which was illegal and amounted to disturbing public peace.

Wondering whether it was brought to the notice of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, the Congress leader demanded that the State government take serious note of it and detain Seeman under the NSA.

The youth wing of the Tamilnadu Congress Committee today said protests would be conducted all over the State if the government failed to arrest Seeman in 24 hours.

A team led by youth wing leader Mayura Jayakumar presented a memorandum to West Zone Inspector General of Police at Coimbatore seeking the arrest of the film director.

Meanwhile, Arul Anbarasu, a MLA of the Congress party has said that a fast protest would be conducted in front of the DGP office, if the police did not come forward to arrest Seeman.

Elsewhere, Seeman’s car was allegedly found burned this morning. According to reports, when Seeman’s car driver Thiyagarajan came to the filmmaker’s office today at 7.30 am, he found the tyres of the vehicle in a burnt condition.

Circles close to the director said that he had left for Vathalagundu only last night to take part in the shoot of a film titled Mayandi Kudumbathar.
