Prohibition in pegs

(December 22, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) Paying heed to a long- time demand of his ‘prospective’ alliance partner, the PMK, over prohibition in Tamilnadu, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said that prohibition would be implemented in a phased manner in the State.

He has reportaedly assured this to a team led by PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss that met him at the Secretariat.

Speaking to reporters after a 40-minute meeting with the Chief Minister, Ramadoss said he met Karunanidhi following a resolution passed at a recent conference to urge the government to implement prohibition.

‘The Chief Minister has assured that prohibition will be implemented in a phased manner in Tamilnadu.

He said that he would invite me to discuss further on the issue,’ said the PMK leader. When reporters asked when he would meet Karunanidhi again, Ramadoss said,’Yes, whenver he calls.’ He, however, refused to answer questions related to politics (especially on his party forging an alliance with the ruling DMK).

Earlier, Ramadoss said Karnataka had implemented prohibition without considering a loss of Rs 2,000 crore to the government.

‘The former Chief Minister of Karnataka Kumarasamy implemented it and the present Chief Minister Yeddyurappa is following suit,’ he said.

Referring to the Tamilnadu government’s stand that there was a danger of illicit liquor flowing like a river in the State if prohibition was implemented, the PMK chief said voluntary and social organisations had assured that they would ensure that illegal arrack was not sold.

He said road accidents were taking place in a large number in Tamilnadu only because of free flow of liquor.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol Thirumavalavan, PMK president G K Mani and members from several organisations accompanied Ramadoss during his meeting with the Chief Minister.
