(December 04, New Delhi, Sri Lanka Guardian) Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today urged the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to pressurise the Lankan government to stop ‘the attacks on Tamils’ in the island nation.
Manmohan reportedly told him that Union External Affairs Minister Prabnab Mukherjee would leave for Colombo soon and take up the matter with the Lankan government.
The Prime Minister gave this assurance when the all-party delegation, led by Karunanidhi, called on him to urge him to help stop the war in Lanka.
Talking to newsmen after the meeting, Karunanidhi, when pointedly queried whether Mukherjee’s visit to Colombo will help solve the problem, replied that he was very hopeful that the visit would be fruitful. But he cryptically added: ‘We need hope’.
Asked about the Left party’s comment that the meeting with the Prime Minister was not all that satisfactory, the Chief Minister parried the question by saying, ‘it is their view’.
Asked whether he broached the subject of arms supply by the Indian government to Sri Lanka with the Prime Minister, Karunanidhi said that he did bring it up with the Prime Minister. ‘He (Manmohan Singh) said that arms were not being supplied’.
On whether he was satisfied with the Prime Minister’s response, Karunanidhi enigmatically said: ‘when he says that arms are not being supplied, what can I say’.
Aside from the Lankan issue, Karunanidhi talked of seeking around Rs.100 crore from the Centre for flood relief works in the State.
Karunanidhi also said that he talked with Home Minister P Chidamabarm the need to set up an NSG base in Tamilnadu.
The delegation called on Manmohan Singh at his residence. Pranab Mukherjee and National Security Advisor M Narayanan were also present on the occasion.
The leaders of various parties requested the Prime Minister to act fast and instruct the government in the neigbouring island to usher peace immediately in strife-torn Lanka. They expressed hope that a solution can be arrived at only through dialogues.
The Prime Minister assured that appropriate action would be taken in this regard.
Pranab Mukherjee would be visiting Sri Lanka soon. However the date of his visit has not been fixed. The meeting lasted for over an hour.
Led by Karunanidhi, the delegation comprised Union Minister T R Baalu, State Ministers Durai Murugan, Arcot Veerasamy, TNCC president K V Thangkabalu, CLP leader D Sudharsanam, PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss, party president G K Mani, Tamilnadu Maanila Mulsim League president Kadher Mohideen, Samathuva Makkal katchi vice president Radhika Sarathkumar and Latchiya Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president Vijaya T Rajendher.
The team would be returning to Chennai by flight later in the evening.
The opposition parties including the AIADMK, DMDK, MDMK boycotted it.
A couple of days ago, the MPs belonging to DMK, Congress, PMK and a breakaway group of the MDMK submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister seeking effective measures to stop the ethnic war in Sri Lanka and make life for Tamilians better. - Sri Lanka Guardian
