(Noember 09, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) With opposition growing to the DMK government on a range of issues including its stand on Lankan Tamils, rising inflation and power shortages, the winter session of the State Legislature being convened tomorrow would turn out to be stormy event for the ruling party.
The entire spectrum of political parties including the main opposition AIADMK, PMK, Congress and Left parties would create a number of obstacles in the course of the House proceedings, according to sources.
There is also speculation doing the rounds that a ‘no-confidence motion’ would be moved against the DMK government in the course of heated exchanges during the winter session. During the opening hours, the House would condole the death of DMDK MLA Veera Illavarasan and past members before adjoining for the day.
Following which, the Business Advisory Committee would meet and fix the number of days for the winter session. According to sources, the House would not sit for more than four days during this season.
The plight of Lankan Tamils caught in the ethnic war between the LTTE and Sinhalese Army was expected to dominate the proceedings of the House and all the parties including the AIADMK, PMK, Congress and Left parties were expected to target their attack on the ruling DMK which was being isolated on this volatile issue concerning the welfare for Eelam Tamils.
After the exit of PMK from the Democratic Progressive Alliance led by the ruling DMK, the government has to face mounting pressure from the AIADMK on the one hand and its former allies including the Congress and the Left parties which had also parted company with the ruling front. Though part of the DPA till now, the Congress has become stridently vocal in its opposition to the DMK’s stand on Lankan Tamils.
Feeling the heat of the combined opposition of political parties, the DMK has a tough job on hand to manage the House proceedings during the winter session. PMK has said the DMK government had back tracked from the decision taken at the all-party meeting for Lankan ceasefire following the pressure from the Central government.
Further, that party was expected to move a resolution in the House on Lankan Tamils issue to corner the DMK government. While the Congress has demanded strict action against those who make pro-LTTE speeches and blamed the government for expressing sympathy to those who have soft corner for a banned militant outfit.
From another side, the Left parties were gearing up for all-round attack on government against its failure to control inflation, growing power shortages and increasing attack on Tamil fishermen by the Lankan Navy. The Opposition AIADMK was also getting ready to file a chargesheet of ‘non-performance and miserable failure’ against the DMK government in the House.
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi chaired a meeting of DMK MLAs on Saturday to draw out a strategy on how to take on the multifold challenges from the political parties on a whole range of issues. Congress Legislature Party would also be meeting later this evening to work out a game plan for the winter session.
Nearly 10 draft bills on ordinances including those on Tamilnadu Value-added Tax, Suburban Police Commissionerate, TN Panchayat Amendment Bill and Sales Tax Act, among others, would introduced during the winter session of the State Legislature to be made into statutory laws. - Sri Lanka Guardian
