TN Assembly adjourned sine die

(November 15, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) The brief winter session of the Tamilnadu Assembly was adjourned sine die on Friday.

Sri Lankan Tamils issue and power shortage in the State dominated the five-day monsoon session in its first three days, where as the brutal attack on some students of the Dr Ambedkar Government Law College here rocked the House on Thursday and Friday.

The session was marred by walkouts by AIADMK, PMK, CPI-M and the CPI several times. AIADMK MLAs were evicted for their unruly behaviour on Wednesday.

AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa did not attend the session even as her bimonthly power bill came up for discussion in the Assembly for two days.

The House, which met on 10 November, was in session for four days after the opening day was adjourned without transacting any business, condoling the death of sitting MDMK legislator Veera Ilavarasan.

During the brief session, the House adopted a resolution, urging the Centre to prevail upon the Sri Lankan Government to declare a ceasefire and protect the Tamils there.

The violent clash between two groups of students of Dr Ambedkar Government Law College rocked the House, leading to the eviction of AIADMK members. They had demanded the resignation of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, owning moral responsibility for the incident, stating that police remained mute spectators to the brutal clash.

On the last day on Friday, the House passed the first supplementary statement of expenditure for the year 2008-09 and 19 other bills.
