Protect the votes at the expense of war.

"The cycle of the disastrous war continues. Those who live comfortably cannot fathom the reality of day to day life of an innocent civilian. If only the politicians take the place of a pauper on the road whose daily struggle is to find the basics of like just for a day, it may shine some light on the ‘truth’ which will make our country once again a ‘pearl in the Indian Ocean’."

[November 24, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardain] ‘There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountain tops of our desires.’ Are the words of Nelson Mandela, in one of his famous books “No Easy Walk to Freedom” by the author Barry Denenberg. Traumatic events are part and parcel of the lives of human beings. They cannot be avoided. People react in different ways to the disasters when they are confronted unexpectedly. Life doesn’t prepare anyone for trauma.

But somehow life has to go on. Our Sri Lankan situation which is multi-ethnicity, multi-cultural, multi-religious nature of the people adds a camouflage richness and glamour to the beauty of the country. But it is unfortunate that the same nature has paved way for a chronic war, ethnic disturbances, appraisals and other political unrests in the history, which could be said to be the chronic war has affected not only the economy of the country but also the lives of people at large.
Where do we look for an out let or for ‘salvation’ in this desperate war torn land? The ever changing political mess, based on long prejudices, chronic war, abuse, selfish motives of the politicians who in a way play ‘musical chairs’, cannot be comprehendible.

Each one has his/her own hidden agendas. Mr. Wimal Weeraransha, leader of the National freedom front, seems to be craving for an immediate election. If the election is postponed, there’ll be many losers including him. The number of parliamentarians participated in the budget discussion reveal the apathy of the whole situation.

Factions within every political group sprout like daisies. The true identity of every political party, and each person in disguised make the disappearances, death, and torture very easy and vulnerable.

The cycle of the disastrous war continues. Those who live comfortably cannot fathom the reality of day to day life of an innocent civilian. If only the politicians take the place of a pauper on the road whose daily struggle is to find the basics of life just for a day, it may shine some light on the ‘truth’ which will make our country once again a ‘pearl in the Indian Ocean’.
