(November 03, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) It is one year since Brigd.Tamilselvan was suddenly taken away from the people for whom he dedicated his life. His spirit lives on among the same people. It is common for the people to say, even now, that they cannot believe that Tamilselvan is not among them.
On 2 November 2007, Tamilselvan was killed in an early morning aerial attack on his resident cum office. The grief that people felt then has turned into disbelief that he is gone. He is loved and remembered for his energy, warmth, dedication, and many other attributes that are admired by the people.
Dr Elumathy Karikalan, writing of him on the anniversary, remembered the many times when he was brought to her injured. She wrote,
“In 1991, in the LTTE attack on Elephant pass, he was brought with serious injury on his chest, in 1993, in the SLA operation “Yarlthevi”, he was brought with a shell piece on his nose, and in 1993, in the LTTE operation “Frog Leap” he was brought with 26 injuries all over his bodies. In all these instances, neither did his face show any pain nor were there tears in his eyes. Instead he smiled all through it. After the last injury he was in intensive care when he received a letter from the Leader of the LTTE which he read again and again gaining strength each time he read it. He disproved the view of medical experts that he will not walk again and trained himself bit by bit with determination which gave him his characteristic walk with the walking stick.”
His energy and warmth was most forceful in the manner in which he functioned, as the Head of the Political Wing, during the mass displacement of Jaffna in 1995. He moved like a tornado to ensure adequate arrangements are made for the welfare of the IDPs. His concern for the IDPs and his energy touched everyone. He was one of those instrumental in implementing the Thileepan Primary health care units in Vanni for the IDPs of 1995.
After returning from his many overseas trips during the ceasefire time, he will describe with pride the dedication and hard work of the Tamil Diaspora for the Tamil cause.
"He and the memories he left behind are and will always be treasures of the people of Tamileelam,' the LTTE said in a statement. - Sri Lanka Guardian
