One issue, many voices

(November 11, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) MLAs of various political parties today made their stands clear over the Lankan Tamils issue and urged that a separate day should be allocated in the Assembly to discuss the problems that Tamils face in the neighbouring country.

C Gnanasekaran (Congress)
‘We have no second thought that the Tamils in Sri Lanka should be protected. At the same time, we can’t accept the speeches of some leaders supporting the LTTE and hailing its leader Prabhakaran. Those expressing solidarity to the banned organisation should be immediately arrested.

V Sivapunniyam (CPI)
The Tigers have announced a ceasefire following a request by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. But the Lankan government has rejected it. I don’t know why the Centre is keeping mum at this time. MLAs should be allowed to express the opinion of the public in the Assembly over the issue.’

C Govindaswamy (CPI-M)
We have been urging that the Tamils in Sri Lanka should be given the right for self governance. Hence the Union government should come forward to ensure a ceasefire in the island nation.

G K Mani (PMK)
The Sri Lankan government is involved in a genocide. So, the Centre should take steps to put an end to the problem. We should pass a resolution in this regard.

D Sudarsanam (Congress)
We too want a ceasefire in Sri Lanka. But we can’t tolerate those supporting the LTTE. The Central and State governments are taking necessary steps sticking on to a resolution adopted at the all-party meeting.

N Ramakrishnan (MDMK)
A resolution should be passed in this Assembly to stop the genocide in Sri Lanka

O Panneerselvam (AIADMK)
Don’t try to deviate from the problem by expressing myriad opinions. The Centre and State should immediately come forward to stop the killings of innocent Tamils in the neighbouring nation.
