"Govt. trying hard to revive white elephant MihinAir"

The Tea Industry thrived under the UNP. But, now because of Govt.’s neglect, small Tea growers of 12 Districts are worst affected. The price of Tea has fallen to a record low in Sri Lanka’s history from a price averaging at Rs. 350.00 per kilo to Rs 200.00 per kilo, whereby every aspect of the Trade is experiencing difficulties.

(November 03, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) UNP Parliamentarian Gayantha Karunatileke , speaking to the Media at the UNP media unit today ( 03 Nov), observed that the Govt. has driven even the Tea Industry , the second largest foreign exchange earner to the brink of total collapse.

What is most disgusting and despicable about the Govt. policy is that it is continuing to devastate whatever sector that is profit making and beneficial to the country , but trying hard to resuscitate MihinAir , the White elephant ,which incurred a loss draining away billions of rupees of people’s money . This road to perdition policy of this Govt. is also responsible for the impending loss of the GSP+ concession , which will result in the Garment sector and many other exporting Industries closing down . Doesn’t the Govt. realize that this Industry is the biggest foreign exchange earner of the country , and must take more interest to protect it instead of showing concern for a loss incurring MihinAir just because the latter has served the Govt.’s pleasure and leisure tours. If the Industries close down , many lakhs of employees in the Garment sector will lose their jobs. In much the same way , about 25 to 30 lakhs more will be directly and indirectly affected by the Tea Industry collapse, he noted with deep concern.

The grower , the Tea auctions , the Tea brokers, the exporters and middle men are crippled by Govt.’s ruthless uncaring attitude, he asserted.

Referring to the recent price reduction on gas, which he described as a rare gesture with this Govt. , he asked of what use is a negligible price decrease of Rs.80.00 on Shell gas and Rs.181.00 on Laugfs gas per cylinder linked to the World prices which have dropped by one third ? The Govt. is waxing boastful of its infinitesimal relief provided to the people on the gas price when the World market price has dropped drastically from US $ 147.00 to US$ 59.00 per barrel of crude oil. Clearly, the Govt. can reduce the price by at least Rs. 270.00 on shell gas , he emphasized.

The Govt. must be reminded that it cannot fool all the people all the time by tricks and tomfoolery . It is learnt the Govt. is having another bagful of tricks, and not relief for the people at the next budget in a few days, like its latest on gas. The UNP has resolved to fight and agitate against the Govt.’s trickery and treachery , he concluded .
