(November 05, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa’s counsel urged the Madras High Court to enact a law to protect the former Chief Minister as she was in the hit list of terrorists.
When the case on the AIADMK leader’s security came before Justice Jayachandran, her counsel Navaneetha Krishnan urged the Judge for a separate law to protect her.
Intervening, the Judge asked how the Court could pass a law when it was the duty of the government.
To this, Advocate General G Masilamani told the Court that the government would provide ‘whatever possible and permissible’ security to Jayalalithaa and a law could not be passed. Earlier, he submitted the details of the security cover provided to the former Chief Minister to the Court.
The case was filed in the Court in the wake of a letter from a pro-Eelam organisation, threatening to ‘eliminate’ her for her anti-LTTE stand.
Later, the convoy of the former Chief Minister was attacked when she was at Pasumpon in southern Tamilnadu to pay homage at the memorial to Muthuramalinga Thevar.
Following this, the Madras High Court directed the State government to submit a detailed report on 5 November over the attack on Jayalalithaa’s car at Pasumpon village. - Sri Lanka Guardian
