(November 11 Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) A sense of disquiet prevailed in the State Assembly today as almost all the parties except the ruling DMK created ruckus over various issues including the Lankan crisis and providing ‘adequate security’ to former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
As a result, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi intervened and requested the Speaker R Avudaiyappan to give permission to discuss on the issues raised by the MLAs.
After the question hour was over this morning, members of the AIADMK, Congress, PMK, MDMK and CPI urged the Speaker to take up adjournment motions moved by them.
Even as the Speaker attempted to pacify them, AIADMK legislators raised slogans to give enough security to their leader Jayalalithaa and not to make false statements through the police department.
They later walked out of the Assembly when Avudaiyappan called the Finance Minister K Anbazhagan to submit supplementary estimates.
The AIADMK legislators returned to the House after some time.
After Anbazhagan submitted the estimates, members of the PMK and the CPI stood up from their seats and urged that the Central and State governments should come forward to ensure ceasefire in Sri Lanka.
Intervening, Avudaiyappan said the issues could be taken up on Wednesday as it was already decided to discuss matters relating to scarcity of fertiliser and water problem today.
However, Congress, PMK and CPI members wanted the Lankan issue should be discussed. Later, members of the Communist party and MDMK staged a walkout and returned to their seats after a while.
The Congress legislators, who were not ready to leave the issue, shouted slogans that Viduthalai Chiruthaigall Katchi leader Thol Thirumavalavan should be arrested for expressing solidarity to the banned LTTE.
When the House was witnessing such noisy scenes, AIADMK MLA O Panneerselvam suggested that the Speaker could pay heed to the issues raised by the members and could take them to discussion later.
Intervening, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi requested the Speaker to postpone the issues that were scheduled to be taken up today and requested him to allow the other party MLAs to speak so that the government could explain its side.
