Wholehearted appeal to the Chief Minister Karunanithy

“Karunanithy must be careful about the hidden agenda’s of the President. It is for the Chief Minister to convince the President not to scheme anything behind his bank with his political bedfellows JHU, JVO, JFF and the extremist monks to create uproar in the streets in Colombo.”

(October 30, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) In a well prepared answers to the questions of Narasimhan Ram, the Editor-in-chief of ‘The Hindu’, the President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa, has flatly stated that the Sri Lanka belongs to all its citizens — Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, others. He further stated: ‘The policy of my Government is to uphold the equality, liberty, fraternity, and development of people belonging to all ethnic, linguistic, and religious communities.’

Very flattering comments indeed! These comments will be mind boggling for the Tamil civilian population who have to live with the daily pressures of the state machinery that is geared to deal with them with suspicion and terror. When Tamils have been reduced to live a wretched life, facing all kinds of pressures, they finds it hard to believe that an invitation has been offered to the Chief Minister Karunanithy to visit Sri Lanka. Karunanithithy must accept this offer with open hand and visit Sri Lanka see to himself how the pearl island is faring.

The Tamil people can neither turn to the LTTE nor to those Tamil groups opposing the LTTE. The government has proved to be a historical beast, that will always undermine and stage-manage their interests. Whilst the LTTE is detested by the people, it is considered to be a necessary malevolence to fight the incorrigible evil that they are compelled to loathe. The anti-LTTE elements are misfits the Tamil have to live with and they are painful predators surviving on the crumbs dished out by the government.

In this hopeless predicament, when President makes these very majestic statements, for the troubled Tamil people, it will be like the king playing with his fiddlestick when Rome was burning. The President has become an efficient manipulator similar to the infamous predecessor, the Late President J R Jayawardena, and has learnt very well how to rock the cot with the baby and also tweak the kid at the same time to make it cry.

Answering to a question ‘What is your reading of the position taken by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Government on the current situation in Sri Lanka?’ the President said ‘I have respect for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi — one of India’s senior-most politicians — and appreciate his thoughts and proposals for a just political solution of the current conflict within the framework of an undivided Sri Lanka. In this connection, I would like to convey through the Government of India my wish to invite Chief Minister Karunanidhi to visit Sri Lanka.’ Given the present circumstances, this is magnificent invitation indeed. Our Tamil brothers and sisters, come hell or high waters, must fully support the president to get down the Chief Minister Karunanithy on a visit Sri Lanka.

On his part Karunanithy must ask the President to join him on a tour to the North on the A9 road to Jaffna and meet Tamils of all walks of life on the way to find out whether the President is the real beacon of hope for them to safeguard them and to deliver the exuberant political deal he is promising. A ceasefire can be declared, until the grand tour ends and the convoys of relief supplies from Tamil Nadu could follow the President and the Chief Minister vehicles to reach the civilian population living in the jungles amidst worms, animals and thundering bombs falling around them.

This is a good opportunity for Rajapakse to see the Tamils in Vanni for the first time as President of Sri Lanka. Their visit further to Jaffna will be historically momentous. The people living in the open Jaffna peninsula prison camp will welcome them with firecrackers, flowers and temple bells to thank the President for guarding them with the army for such a long time. The whole tour to be meaningful, it must proceed to the Chemmany Chdalai (crematorium) where skeletons of murdered Tamils were found in mass scale. Garlands can be placed where Krishanthy was gang raped and brutally murdered with her mother and brother some years ago. This will give more respect for the President as he will be considered as leader who has done something to please the Tamils whilst pursuing his war agenda.

Karunanithy must be careful about the hidden agenda’s of the President. It is for the Chief Minister to convince the President not to scheme anything behind his bank with his political bedfellows JHU, JVO, JFF and the extremist monks to create uproar in the streets in Colombo.

If time permits, the Chief Minister can visit the East to understand how the Presidents visionary Provincial Council is functioning. When speaking to the real people there, he can establish whether the government is empowering the people or stream rolling them with the historical agenda to make the minorities manageable under the long established policy.

Will Karunanithy take this excellent thought seriously to keep Sinna Thamby and Poddi Malli happy in Sri Lanka? Mmmm…..
