(October 03, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The speech delivered by President Rajapqakse in the 63rd session of UN Assembly last Wednesday has clearly conveyed his government’s policies.
He has made a declaration at an international forum that his government will hold talks with the LTTE only if it lays down the arms and returns to democratic streamlines. This has to be construed as a commitment for a military solution. It has to be understood that there can never be a political solution.
Political analysts who have been observing the role of the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE during the last two decades know that the LTTE’s commitment that it will not lay down their arms until a reasonable political solution that can meet the aspirations of the Tamils is offered and implemented successfully.
Last year, President Rajapakse addressed the UN Assembly in Sinhala and won the hearts of the Sinhala people. This year he addressed also in Tamil hoping to win the hearts of the Tamil people.
Instead of talking in Tamil, the President could have spoken to the Tamil people. It would be meaningful. It would have been better had he made a feasible offer for peace!
