Kelanitissa Power Plant Under Attack
TAF has launched two attacks in Single mission
(SLT 11.25PM) [October 28, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian] The air wing of the Tamil Tigers has launched surprised strikes at the Thalladi Airforce camp in Mannar this evening. "They have dropped two bombs in the camps and as a result number of soldiers have been killed and wounded," source in security forces told Sri Lanka Guardian anonymously.
The Air Defence System in Colombo was alerted once but they felt that the Tiger aircraft has come to Colombo after its mission in Mannar.
Meanwhile sources in Colombo said that the Kelanitissa Power Station came under LTTE attack short while ago. "Tiger Air Force have dropped two bombs on the power station," source said.
According to security sources, "the air defense system has been currently activated in Colombo and some parts of the city are experiencing blackout.” “A suspicious aircraft was detected over the skies of Colombo a short while ago” according to military sources. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the LTTE may have targeted the Kelanitissa power plant.
Speaking to Sri Lanka Guardian, W. J. Senewiratna the Minister of Electricity says , " the attack did not damage the plant but two cooling fans were reported damaged in the TAF attack".
But according to reliable sources, fire engines have been dispatched to the Combined Cycle type Kelanithissa power plant which is 163 MW capacity. Parts of the coolant system connected to a gas turbine have caught fire.
