Put the pole vaulters in their place

(October 20, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) It makes me sad to see the MPs we elected to oppose the Chinthanaya being made use of to prop up the Chinthanaya government. Karu and the gang are used by Mahinda Rajapakse for Ranil bashing and UNP bashing. When MR gives a script of five lines, they come out with 25 lines.
They do more damage to the UNP than the SLFPers themselves. To appease MR and to keep their posts intact they go all out to show that they are against UNPers. They still call themselves UNPers because they don’t want to lose their seats, and thus the ministerial portfolios.
The turncoats very well know that they don’t stand a chance of being re-elected if they contest on an UPFA ticket. On the eve of a general election they will try to come back to the UNP after doing all the damage, as they don’t have any conscience. If by any chance Ranil steps down they will slowly creep in. Therefore the UNP MPs should not fight among themselves or try to work according to others’ agendas, and make Ranil step down.
These ‘high jumpers’ talk about 12 or 13 ‘election debacles.’ In fact they themselves are responsible for these so called debacles. They lost their electorates, but were returned at district level, thanks to the Proportional Representation system.
It is now an open secret as to how the elections are won. In addition to the state sponsored thugs and corrupt police officers, we now have corrupt election officials too.
At a crucial time, like last year’s budget vote, all MPs must abide by the party decision. If all the 25 UNP MPs who crossed over to the government, vote against the party decision, the party hierarchy should be able to sack them after calling for their explanations.
The legal eagles in the party should find ways to strengthen the party leader’s hand and see that the pole vaulters cannot contest the decision in a court of law. If at all, any reform is needed to the UNP constitution, this is the time for it.
Some moles in the higher ranks may try to thwart this action to safeguard their friends but this has to be done at any cost to save the party and Sri Lanka from these unscrupulous people.
