The Centre can at the most ask the Lankan government to ensure the safety of unarmed innocent Tamils and that’s it. Even if India asks Sri Lanka to stop the ongoing military operation, what is the necessity for Lanka to listen to India?

(October 15, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) The ‘all party’ meeting, sans a major section of the opposition like AIADMK, MDMK, BJP & DMDK, convened by the Tamilnadu government has passed three resolutions:
The Centre must stop the supply of arms to Sri Lanka government and ensure an end to the alleged genocide by enforcing a ceasefie, the Centre must help arrange to send relief materials for the Sri Lankan Tamils through the Red Cross, the Centre must help find a permanent solution to the problems including the repeated loss of lives of the Indian fishermen near the Sri Lankan waters.
There cannot be any second opinion about the second and third resolutions passed by the all-party meeting.
There cannot be any second opinion about the second and third resolutions passed by the all-party meeting.
It is indeed a fact that the hapless Tamil community is suffering caught between the Sri Lankan Forces and the LTTE militant forces.
The efforts being made by the Sri Lankan government to rehabilitate the unarmed Tamil people outside the LTTE dominated areas are not yielding expected results as they are being used as a cover by the fast depleting LTTE.
In such a sad scenario, it becomes the responsibility of the Indian government to ensure their safety by talking to the Sri Lankan government apart from making arrangements to send relief materials through organisations like Red Cross.
The Centre must also follow up with the talks it had with Sri Lanka at the sidelines of the SAARC summit and ensure the safety and security of the Indian fishermen. Though it is true that the LTTE is also playing dirty games in the seas and a section of Tamil fishermen indulge in smuggling of diesel and other materials for the LTTE due to fear or money motivation, the Centre must take effective steps by taking the help of Indian Navy and Coast Guard.
With regard to the first resolution, the Indian government may stop supplying of military equipments, but asking the Sri Lankan government to stop its operation against an internationally banned terrorist organisation is just not possible, as it amounts to interference in the internal affairs of another country.
The Centre can at the most ask the Lankan government to ensure the safety of unarmed innocent Tamils and that’s it. Even if India asks Sri Lanka to stop the ongoing military operation, what is the necessity for Lanka to listen to India?
Also, when there is no confirmation on the alleged genocide, particularly when the other Tamil leaders like Anandasagaree, Charndrahasan, Douglas Devananda and Karuna are not making such a complaint, there is no point in rubbing a friendly neighbour on the wrong side.
Moreover, the LTTE is a banned organisation here too and India is on the look out for the LTTE Chief as he is the prime accused in the murder of its former Prime minister. President Rajapakse is also on record saying that, he would send Prabhakaran to India if he were caught alive and if India asks for him. In this kind of a scenario, If India asks Sri Lanka to stop its operation against the LTTE, it is laughable.
The Tamilnadu government giving two weeks ultimatum to the Centre and threatening it with the resignation of the members of parliament from the State in the event of no action from the centre, may not cut much ice with the public.
Had this action been taken some four years back, people would have appreciated, but this stand taken at the fag end of the Lok Saba smacks of political opportunism. The DMK government has resorted to this climactic step in Elam politics only after its previous stunt of sending lakhs of telegrams to the Prime Minister, in the aftermath of the other opposition parties like PMK, CPI and DMDK stealing the limelight, failed miserably.
Notwithstanding this, the DMK government has also influenced the Tamil film fraternity to jump into the bandwagon by organising a rally at Raemshwaram against the Sri Lankan government. Unfortunately for the government, a major section of the tinsel world doesn’t seem to be receptive to the idea of getting embroiled in ‘politics’, especially after its disgusting experience in the Cauvery and Hogenakkal issues.
Whatever said and done, it is too late now for the Tamilnadu’s pro-LTTE parties, for it is only a matter of time before the Lankan forces capture the underground headquarters of the LTTE. If at all the Tamilnadu parties are serious and sincere about the welfare of the Sri Lankan Tamils, it would be better for them to either cooperate with the Centre or leave it free without any pressure.
India can always ensure a democratic, peaceful and long-standing solution for the Sri Lankan Tamils, once the menacing militancy is out of the scene.
