"People are lameting on the Regime"

(October 15, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Gayantha Karunatileke, UNP M.P. addressing the media today (15 Oct),lamented that the Govt. not only paved the way for the War hero Janaka Perera‘s death, but also committed the worst sacrilege by repudiating its promise to airlift the remains of Late Janaka and his wife to Anuradhapura resulting in their bodies being kept by the wayside at Ratmalana Airport most disrespectfully for five hours . While this Govt. meted out this treatment to a celebrated war hero who saved the country from the terrorists , it deemed fitting to provide helicopters about the same period to Pillayan and pals to attend the Karuna Amman ‘s (both ,erstwhile LTTE leaders ) appointment as M.P.

The Govt. is even trying to subvert the investigations into the deaths and cover up its lapses on falsehoods and deceits. The UNP will not allow the Govt. to hush up the investigations nor distort the findings. The UNP has demanded an impartial investigation on international level as it has no faith on any of the Govt. inquiries, he exhorted.

Speaking on the plummeting fuel prices in the world market, he said, the Govt. is openly black marketing on fuel sales to its own people. The Govt. which went on raising fuel prices blaming on the world market price hikes and promised to bring them down if there is a price slump in the world market, is inventing all novel methods of lying when the world prices have come down. From US $ 147.00, the crude oil price per barrel has dropped drastically to US $ 80.00. This means on the basis of the world market prices, petrol can be sold now at Rs. 93.00, diesel at Rs. 72.00 and Kerosene at Rs. 60.00 per litre inclusive of all taxes, levies and profits. Yet, the Govt. and its Corporation by spurting out a profusion of lies refuses to reduce the prices betraying the people and breaking its promises. The Govt. which raises the prices of gas on the explanation that it is linked to the oil prices, has refused to bring down the gas prices too, he pinpointed.

The Govt. elected by the people sells diesel at Rs. 110.00 per litre to its own people, but, sells at concessionary rates at Rs.83.94 per litre to Foreign Companies owned vessels. Obviously, this is to serve the ulterior motives of interested parties, he asserted.
