MK’s move paves way to speculation

(October 15, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) In a bid to put pressure on the Centre to take steps to halt Sri Lankan Army’s ‘attack on Tamils’, political parties in Tamilnadu on Tuesday threatened that their MPs from the State would resign en masse if the UPA government did not take action within a fortnight.

A resolution to this effect was passed at an all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi here.

The resolution, adopted at the end of a three-and-a-half hour meeting, said if the Centre did not take steps to stop the Lankan army’s offensive in Tamil-speaking areas of the country, their MPs would quit their membership.

The meeting was attended by leaders of DMK, Congress, PMK and Left parties which have 35 members in Lok Sabha besides two MDMK rebels. MDMK has two members in Lok Sabha.

The move, which was reportedly proposed by Karunanidhi, has given rise to a few questions in the political arena— Will the Congress high command approve if its MPs resign? Will the DMK walk out of the UPA if the Congress MPs fail to put in their papers?

Meanwhile, main opposition AIADMK, its ally MDMK, BJP and DMDK floated by actor-turned-politician Vijayakant boycotted the meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, Karunanidhi, in an apparent reference to the boycott by AIADMK and other parties, said ‘Sinhalese fanatics’ should not think that the absence of some parties in the meeting did not mean support for their acts.

Citing media reports of India supplying arms to Sri Lanka, another resolution asked the Centre to stop it immediately.

In his concluding remarks at the all-party meet, Karunanidhi said all political parties should learn lessons from the past and remain united.

‘Let us take a pledge to remain united to extend help to the suffering Sri Lankan Tamils. We must learn from the past. The fratricidal war had weakened the cause of Sri lankan Tamils’, he said.

On the absence of AIADMK, DMDK, BJP and MDMK from the meeting, he said ‘we should not consider their absence as a setback. They have not come because of differences with me. Let Sinhalese fanatics not think that they are supporting them’, he said.

Karunanidhi expressed the hope that he would succeed in taking everybody along to press upon the Centre to save Sri Lankan Tamils.
