Karunanidhi lauds Vaiko over Lankan issue

(October 17, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) Taking exception to AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa’s charge that the all-party meeting on the Lankan crisis was a farce, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Thursday welcomed MDMK leader Vaiko’s announcement that his party’s two MPs would also resign.

Karunanidhi, who announced a human chain protest here on 21 October, said that all the seven DMK Ministers would not remain in office if the UPA regime failed to intervene in Sri Lanka.

He also recalled the resignation of T R Baalu and A Raja from the Vajpayee government five years ago.

‘Vaiko had said that his party MPs would resign even though he had not attended the meeting, and this shows his sentiments,’ he said.

On Jayalalithaa’s charge that the all-party meeting was a farce, Karunanidhi said the deliberations lasted more than three hours and leaders of 20 parties and organisations participated.

‘These leaders have to reply her,’ he said.

Noting that Jayalalithaa’s stand had been praised by Sri Lankan President’s advisor, Basil Rajapakse, he said, ‘This proves who is with the Sinhalese establishment.’

It is expected that the DMK Ministers — Cabinet Ministers T R Baalu and A Raja, and Ministers of State S S Palanimanickam, Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan, S Regupathy, K Venkatapathy and Radhika Selvi, would hand over post-dated letters addressed to Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee to Karunanidhi today.

Meanwhile, reports have it that the DMK is thinking of collecting relief materials like food, clothes and medicine and send them through the Red Cross to Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka’s north, if the Centre failed to do so.

PMK leader S Ramadoss asked parties not to play politics on this issue. ‘We all should unite for the cause and support the Chief Minister’s efforts. We should not miss this opportunity to ensure that Lankan Tamils got their just rights.’

Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P Nedumaran criticised Jayalalithaa for her remarks that India should not interfere in Lanka’s internal affairs.
