(October 24, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) UNP Parliamentarian P. Harrison addressing the media today ( 24 Oct), said that Late Major Gen. Janaka Perera was among the greatest three Army Commanders who served the Country. The other two are Late Major Gen.Denzil Kobbekaduwa and Wije Wimalaratne. Indeed , this Govt. is indebted to them , even for the present successes, if any, in the fight against the LTTE ,because it is they who earlier wrested the initiative from the LTTE . Janaka Perera in particular is remembered by the whole Nation for the victory by capturing Jaffna when over 4000 soldiers were trapped there. Not only he saved their lives, but also won over the Jaffna peninsula , he added.
One could therefore imagine the dangers to his life he would have faced from the deadly LTTE , the Karuna and Pillayan factions (the LTTE break away groups) while in service and after retirement. How could the Govt. be so callous and refuse security to such a heroic war Major General just because he contested as a UNP candidate for the last North Central Province elections ? , he asked.
The Govt. including the Defence Secretary and others ,are aware that the country was saved and they too are still living owing to the military efforts of Army Chiefs like Janaka Perera who broke the backbone of the LTTE during their period.
It is only after the Supreme Court stated that his life is in grave danger and ordered security that the Govt. thought of it. This is how the Govt. showed its ‘gratitude’.

Finally, it deliberately paved the way for him to become the victim of the assassin’s bomb by withdrawing the security before time . The IGP provided security on Court order for a longer period, but the Govt. dismantling his security prematurely including his own private security ( by arresting them) made him a sitting duck for his enemies, he bemoaned.
Not enough the ill treatment meted out to him while living , the Govt. went great lengths to desecrate the remains of him and his wife by backing out from the solemn promise earlier made by it to airlift them to Anuradhapura. Because of this infernal dishonoring of promise, their corteges had to be most disrespectfully left by the wayside at Ratmalana Airport for hours from where they were to be airlifted according to the previous arrangements.
The Govt. has still not been able to find a clue in this carnage which claimed 30 lives and over 100 sustained injuries. As the UNP is of the view that the death is surrounded by suspicious circumstances and this Govt. is suppressing the truth and subverting investigations , it has called for an investigation at International level from the Govt. he asserted. - Sri Lanka Guardian
